  • Friday Nights - 7:30pm, 18+ years, sponsored by Jack Daniels There's something very character-building about a pool comp. For two reasons: (1) Pool is a funny one, in which talent seems to come out of thin-air. I mean, sure you were a novice when you were eleven, but somehow - about your eighteenth birthday - it all comes together and you are able to pull-off the near impossible on a pool table - with graceful and effortless ease (almost like it's somehow residual in your DNA) - to the complete and utter surprise of all around, just as-much as the participant. This of course gives the participant a great lesson in acting, as he or she must play-the-part of someone who has achieved nothing-more than what they had anticipated. And: (2) It's almost a cliché - but the game of Pool is entirely built around confidence. And whilst we can't delve into the effects of alchohol on a platform such-as this - we CAN say that confidence is an amazing thing. Two types of people fail in a poo

  • Paul Pearce reflects on the amazing snow cover Australia had back in the 'good old days' in his article 'The Tide is Running Out'. Most of us know that our beloved snow is on a downward spiral. We know it because the experts have been telling us this for some time. Organisations like the CSIRO have been releasing studies with findings that report total area covered by snow shrinking by up to 85% by 2050 and the average 112-day ski season shrinking by 80 days over the same period. What all these studies also seem to agree on is that there has been a marked reduction in snow cover since the 1950s, so let’s look at some historical snapshots to see what it was like in the ‘good old days’. In Klaus Hueneke’s People of the Australian High Country, he quotes Ross Bolton (a member of a family that lived and worked on the Snowy Plain and mined at Diggers Creek, as early as the 1870s) recalling that they sourced timber on the nearby Grey Mare range: “You’d go there in the summer t

The sessions will be from 5pm to 6pm at the Berridale Hall and from 6.30pm to 7.30pm at the Cooma Ex-Services Club. No registration is required. • There are some lines in and around Thredbo best left well alone by all, even the experts. Stanley's Gorge just out of bounds to the north of the resort is a massive terrain trap, steep, prone to avalanche - yes, serious slides happen here, you can die - and with an ugly get out. Dominating it's face is a massive granite boulder. The Big Rock at Stanleys. Maybe it had another name in [...]

  • Every home or lodge should have one of these - Canberra DIY snowmaker Dario Jurjević can turn his yard into a snow playground in a few frosty hours with his homemade snowmaking system. I caught up with him to find out how he does it - he can make them to order too. He doesnt actually ski or board himself, but he has made up to a 60cm base in optimum conditions and does a toboggan slide for the kids - you could make your own mini park features too! He started out 5 years ago with a US import system but his homemade ones are better.

  • Move over, slow down! Protect those who protect us by slowing down and giving them the space they need to stay safe. This week we have highlighted the importance of National Road Safety Week (NRSW), which runs from 16-23 May. NRSW is an annual initiative from the Safer Australian Roads and Highway group that brings attention to the 1,200 lives lost and 44,000 who are seriously injured on Australian roads each year. Mayor Peter Beer led the events by encouraging others to drive safely so we can return home to our loved ones and encouraging the community to make the pledge. Our customer service officers and Visitor Centre staff wore yellow ribbons, you may have seen posters on display at each of our offices with a QR code so our community could pledge to drive so others survive. Local emergency services including the Monaro Police District, Highway Patrol, Ambulance, State Emergency Service, Monaro Fire Brigade and Monaro Team Rural Fire Service joined forces to get behind this m

The largest loads transporting TBM cargo through Cooma to Lobs Hole will involve some disruptions to traffic. Deliveries are scheduled at night time and early mornings when there is less traffic on the road and minimal impact to motorists. • Cold, Frosty Night Ahead for NSW, Vic & Southern Queensland! We've had some chilly nights already this autumn, but tomorrow morning will feel like winter has definitely arrived! Several days of cold fronts have swept increasing amounts of cold, dry air into large parts of eastern Australia. Tonight that's likely to bring widespread frosts across the NSW ranges - with isolated to scattered frosts occurring further inland into the slopes and plains. Some of those frosts will even extend into the Darling Downs of Southeast Queensland! In Victoria, the winds should ease tonight though are still likely to remain elevated for a day or two yet, so frosts should be more localised (and more so over northeastern areas) there. For people like me who reside in Southeast Queensland it will be quite a shock after the spring like warmth and humidity that helped bring unseasonably stormy conditions for May earlier this week. I've included an OCF forecast minimum temperatures chart for tomorrow mo

  • Come and meet your local firefighters and learn about home fire safety at the Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Open Day on Saturday, 15 May 2021. Jindabyne Fire Station will be hosting an event between 10.00am and 2.00pm to showcase FRNSW’s broad capabilities. Children will be able to see a fire truck, demonstrations and firefighting equipment whilst the grown-ups will be able to find out more about home fire safety. Captain David Farmer said Open Day was an opportunity to show people that firefighters do so much more than fight fires. “From fires, road crashes, hazardous material incidents and natural disasters to urban search and rescue, our crew are prepared for anything and ready to help anytime, anywhere,” he said. “A large part of our role is to educate the community about home fire safety and that’s where Open Day comes in. “This year we are focussing on the importance of having a working smoke alarm in your home. “Each year, approximately 20 people die in NSW fro

  • Vail Resorts have today released updated information in regard to their day ticket sales and winter operations for Perisher, Hotham and Falls Creek ahead of their opening day on Saturday June 12. They have advised that no mountain access reservations are anticipated for their season pass Epic Australia Pass holders. The Epic Australia Pass is currently on sale and will increase by $100 on May 11. On their website they state: "We do not anticipate 2021 Epic Australia Pass holders will need to make reservations to ski or ride at Perisher, Falls Creek or Hotham this season. However, in the event the resorts need to manage capacity to allow for physical distancing, Vail Resorts may manage access through a reservation system that prioritises pass holders." Lift Ticket Sales A full range of lift tickets will go on sale from late May. Snowsports school lessons and rental products will also be available from late may. • Big Tech has thrown down its first big salvo against the federal governments’ proposed News Media Bargaining Code! This morning, Facebook took a heavy handed approach in response to the Australian governments’ proposed law (The News Media Bargaining Code) that would force them, and other big tech companies like Google to pay a substantial amount for showing news headlines and images. As of this morning, Facebook has removed all news related articles from any and all AU news outlets. The net was cast very wide, affecting a large number of smaller media pages, as well as the major players targeted by Facebook. Even parody news pages such as The Betoota Advocate were affected (thankfully, many these ones have been remedied). Facebook’s position is that Emergency Information from News platforms will still be displayed, although how this information will rank in the Facebook feed algorithm in the future remains to be seen. Google has threatened to remove Google Search from Aust

  • The Roll On In Motorcycle Rally was stated by two passionate motorcycle riders with over 30 years of riding experience. We're all about bringing together the motorcycle community, to firstly share our passion for motorcycles & riding as well as raising funds for a charity that is very close to our hearts - CareFlight. At the 2020 rally, thanks to our amazing Rollers, we raised over $3000. The twists and turns, accelleration, the throttle and the roar of the beast beneath you. It doesn't matter what you ride or what your experience, we know you understand what we mean. Riding is in our DNA, we breathe it, it runs through our veins. We get those days when riding is all that matters, just like you. Come ride with us....

It’s been a weird, challenging season with unique difficulties for the resorts, their guests, alpine communities and the snow industry in this Covid-shaped year.

Each evening after a hard-day's hunting this pair of unlikely friends could be seen sharing a romantic deer carcass meal together as the sun set over their wilderness home.

  • The snow has arrived but the season hasn't started ❄️ Tourists in the Alpine area spotted over the weekend could further delay the opening of a ski season, according to the Snowy Monaro Regional Council. Kosciuszko National Park is currently open for local use only. The council says businesses reported a number of Canberrans and Sydney-siders in the mountain villages over the weekend. It says the snow community is doing everything it can to support the government's COVID-19 policies so the snow season can eventually start.

It's six years since Kingswood first crashed the teeming Australian touring circuit, raising the stakes for iconic headliners as diverse as the Saints and the Living End with balls-out and belching rock singles like Medusa, She's My Baby, Sucker Punch and Ohio. Their debut album, an electrifying act of hard rock sophistication called Microscopic Wars, was made at Nashville's Blackbird Studio with multi-Grammy-winner Vance Powell (Jack White, Arctic Monkeys, Kings of Leon). It made directly for the Top 10 in 2014, followed by nomination for that year's Best Rock Album at the annual ARIA Awards. They're heading to The Station and are set rock the roof off!

  • It’s been a huge July, with an incredible series of events, and the best news is its only just getting started. We are bringing you a week of nonstop partying, great skiing and snowboarding, and a huge free concert presented by Corona Sunsets. There are a stack of on and off mountain events kicking off today. You can bare it all at the kosci in your Cossies ride, before heading to a huge after party at the Alpine Bar at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel, all thanks to Kosciuszko Pale Ale. Join legendary musical acts JoyRide and Groove city for a night you’ll be talking about all semester. As always there will be an epic after party at the Keller Bar, for those party animals who aren’t ready to go home. Then Saturday the fun continues, with Midday Session at Merritts Mountain House. You can head straight from the slopes to the bar and grab an ice cold corona on the mountain deck. The night is only just getting started with live music from some of Australia’s best DJ’s including Jami

  • Nicole Millar is ready to introduce Excuse Me, her anticipated debut album. It’s the product of two years of life, a whole lot of growth and a rollercoaster of emotions. Excuse Me charts everything from admitting your faults and owning your shit to wild nights with best friends and the bittersweet parts of love, lust and relationships. Pop music with bite and electronic production collide on Excuse Me for songs that bleed glitter, guts and neon pink. Some of the tracks are tributes to getting rowdy with girlfriends or daydreams about wanting to be rich in New York, others are eyerolls at fake people, button-pushing boyfriends and ex-lovers.
