This is a plea to horse riders in Kosciuszko to stick to the Code of Practice for horse riding in parks. On the Anzac weekend, four riders were photographed in Pockets Creek, northern Kosciuszko. They forded the creek – see the second photo – and then rode along the creek valley. The Code of Practice asks riders to ‘Avoid riding any area where soils are waterlogged’ and ‘where possible, cross streams at bridges rather than by fording’ (p 4, 5). The Code also asks riders to prefer designated roads and trails; two management trails run parallel to Pockets Creek just 200 to 500 metres away. Riding in the valley of this small, gentle creek worsens the damage caused by feral horses. Scientific monitoring of the Kosciuszko horse plan 2021-2027 will be difficult if riders make their own tracks in areas populated by feral horses.
