Reclaim Kosci
As part of our series on the history of KNP, this post focuses on the contribution of Neville Gare. Gare began as the first park manager at Kosciuszko in 1958, immediately making an impact on the park through identifying areas for soil restoration. Gare implemented awareness of Kosciuszko as a natural wonder to be protected, developing signage, walking tracks, brochures and an information centre to help visitors understand conservation. The harm of hooved animals on Kosciuszko’s alpine region was identified in numerous scientific studies prior to 1958, and as a result, grazing was banned but illegal stock were common. As a result, Gare faced years of removing stock from the park and battles with graziers, undeterred by threats and even an effigy of a park ranger. He implemented the idea of bushfire control and limited development, and assisted in the development of a draft management plan for the park. Neville Gare worked diligently to preserve the natural beauty of Kosciusko. Individuals like Gare represent early efforts of scientists and environmentalists, whose legacy we honour today by continuing to fight for the same alpine region they believed was worth protecting. Pictured is Gare at Cowombat Flat in 1962.
