The current deep snow cover is a reminder of the the Australian Alp's contribution to the some of Australia's most important rivers. Around 30% of the water in the Murray Darling Basin comes from the Alps. Alpine plants, like sphagnum moss, absorb and slowly release water, smoothing out extreme rainfall events. Those plants will play a vital role in mitigating flood peaks when the snow in this image melts. Image: Betts Creek, Snowy River catchment, June 2022, by Peter Conroy.
