Watsons Creek Gorge Skiers Left - A natural cornice failure and subsequent slab triggered earlier in the week. Ski pole set to 1m.
Good reminder to be cautious around cornices (especially in whiteout conditions) and beware of significant and rapid changes to the snowpack. This event likely occurred the night of the 11th/12th when the Main Range received 52mm of precipitation (mostly rain).
This event illustrates that large cornice failures have great potential to trigger avalanches on the slope below even when there are insignificant and/or deeply buried layers of concern.
Thank you Doug Chatten of Snowy Mountains Backcountry for the pics and report.
